Helping People Doctor Themselves
Be your own health expert
Dr. Pravin Chordia, M.B.B.S., M.S.
During these trying economic times, more and more people have either chosen or been forced to become more involved with overseeing their own healthcare.
“If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself. You should be pro-active in each & every decision of the life. This especially includes your health care.”
Will you ask the engineer to build the house, if he does not know science about cement, steel, sand, structural detailing etc.?
Will you take the advice from beggar about ‘How to earn money?’
Will you appoint a security guard who does not know details about your built in a security system?
Will you appoint a driver who does not know the basics of the vehicle like fuel, tire pressure, and various alarm signals of the vehicle?
The answer to all questions is obviously no. But unfortunately about the health issues we are going to the so-called health expert who does know very little about the healthy lifestyle, healthy food.
One must understand the myth created by current pharmaceutical industry and doctors. That an army of medical specialists and pharmaceutical drugs is necessary to maintain health. In fact nature has created 6 doctors for you namely Air, Food, Water, Exercise, Sunshine and Rest. It is far more important to understand them than knowing few medicines which most of the times damages you.
Healing is too big a topic for any one person to know it all. While that statement includes me and you, it also includes your doctor. But it is possible to learn more than your doctor knows, particularly in key areas that specifically apply to your body. In fact, you may discover and relearn many new things & material that your doctor never saw, or did see and never investigated. I am writing these statements after spending more than 35 years of life in conventional medical education & practice. Friends, we doctors are bombarded by names of various syndromes going by particular scientist name. We study too much about very rarely seen problems, we gave examination based on many things which does not bear practical implications in our medical practice. Friends the knowledge about the basics of the body function, good nutrition, good life-style has been conveniently put on the back seat. Now in modern era whole medical world is driven more by the pharma industry study reports & medical representative presentation. We take our decisions based on reports & machines. We take least effort to go to the root cause of various problems. We have become expert in giving you cover-up treatments. Why suddenly sperm count has dropped from 120 million to 20 million? Why greying of hair is seen even in school kids? Why many people are showing vitamin B12 & vitamin D deficiency? Why so many PCOD patients are coming up? Why even simple natural thing like delivering a baby has become difficult task for most of the women? Why such grievous rise in metabolic issues, infertility & malignancies? When I meet my doctor friends, most of them agree with me but they seems to be happy with the situation as medical business is prospering.
Aren’t doctors the ones for this duty; isn’t it their special province to be the formally educated authorities on health?
Commonly, yes; but, a doctor’s authority today often exceeds his or her knowledge. Whole bodies of knowledge in healing are ignored because they are unorthodox and non-medical. A doctor’s education seems exhaustive, yet medical education study so much about drugs and surgery—and so little about lifestyle, nutrition, fasting, herbal remedies, spinal manipulation, massage, vitamin and mineral therapy, homeopathy, acupuncture, auto-urine therapy and more—that we realize their qualifications are incomplete. While studying various syndromes, we doctors have started forgetting the basic rules of physics, chemistry and biology.
This takes nothing away from their dedication as individuals, but they are prone to following certain theories over other theories, particular practices over other alternatives, and holding opinions as well as facts. Commercial interests are many times over shadowing the true opinions. As medical field has very large grey area, area in which one cannot judge the right or wrong? If you have a fever, one doctor will think as a viral fever, another doctor will go in favour of something else.
This is true with any person, certainly, but it is our responsibility to cover all possible ground in our efforts to cure and prevent illness. If we learn more than the doctor in areas of value to our health, it is our duty to apply this knowledge to the betterment of ourselves and our families. We need total health more than medically approved health. Our wellness should not be limited to our doctor’s experience, but enhanced by our own experience.
Medicine is aptly described as an art, not a science. Health is not equivalent to medicine. It encompasses too many other things. Our health starts from our soil, from our food we eat, from our environment we live in. Our body works in a very specific well planned manner. It requires good quality lifestyle for its proper functioning. This ultimate truth will not change anytime. Always believe in 1 in 100 principle. We must understand that 99 out of 100 things which are happening in the world has some reason (cause) behind it. Only 1 out of 100 people try to think in this way. Most of us are busy with correcting the symptom or the effect without taking any pains to know & cure the cause.
“What is your advice for treating this disease condition?” is the commonest question for every human being. The concise & correct answer to this question is
“You need to change your entire life.” Yes, change your life. If you want to get better, that is what you have to do.
The first step is to read a lot, a whole lot. If you are well educated, and especially if you are a health professional, you will have to unlearn much of what you’ve been taught and start afresh with the rather disruptive thought that natural healing may actually work. If you are not highly educated, you will need to abandon your anxiety and fear of reading and doing research. The old saying is still true: “A person who doesn’t read is no better off than a person who cannot read.”
What can we do to take charge of our own healthcare?
What first steps can everyone benefit from taking?
If you have never tried a plant-based diet, start. If you’ve never juiced vegetables, start. If you’ve never taken vitamin C to saturation, start. If you have never done a half-hour fitness workout each day, start.
But, there is no such thing as a free lunch, a quick fix or a magic wand to cure illness. I wish there were easy answers to people’s health questions. There aren’t. There are answers, all right, but they are not easy.
“Give a man a fish, and he will be hungry tomorrow. Teach a man to fish, and he will always have food.” This is my personal and professional philosophy, because it is true. It is the very core of this booklet.
Modern medicine has created more co-dependents even than co-pays. We’ve learned to hold out for a magic bullet such as a new miracle drug, breakthrough surgical procedure or new organ transplant. What rubbish? Even media has been used effectively by these people. Balanced diet to pregnant women is shown as few tablet supplements, they don’t show fruits/vegetables. ‘Your sneezing can be H1N1 virus’ is the ad shown on the media as public education step. Actually this is creating phobia & fear in the society. Real message about the true prevention is not passed on to the people either by doctors or the media people.
The very word “patient” implies passivity and powerlessness. Me-teacher-you-dumbbell, or me-doctor-you-patient, or me-politician-you-voter, or any other paternalistic or maternalistic stay-in-your-place tradition will not do any good to the system. Such were the old ways, and they are obsolete and unproductive. If you want to be productive, follow leads and dig. Whether it is for oil, gold or health information, it requires action—your action. Question authority. Do it yourself, be proactive. This is my philosophy.
First, you have to ask yourself this most important question: “What are you willing to do to get better?”
The answer I want, of course, its, “Anything.” But as with wedding vows or New Year’s resolutions, I know better than to hold people too rigorously to their dreams. Flexibility is never more necessary than with self-health care. I will accept a two-thirds effort, I passed anyone at 65%. More is better, but if you were to entirely change two-thirds of your life, I’d be satisfied and also impressed. Especially if you hold to it for more than a year. And, I think you’d be impressed with the results you achieved. I am dead sure that after that you will never abandon it.
Easy to say; harder to do. What if we do it ourselves, and do it wrong?
Don’t worry at all. We doctors frequently get it wrong. Eg. If you go to 4-5 doctors with same set of complaints, they have different opinions & offer different treatments. So you can imagine even doctors can do mistake in judging you. Have you ever imagined a situation in the country like India where a person who is supposed to be expert in particular pathy is allowed to practice something else? A homeopath is allowed to practice allopathy. This is akin to allowing truck driver to be pilot. We are risking our lives not their lives by doing this.
Can we do better? Quite possibly. No person knows your body better than you. The world’s most sophisticated and sensitive diagnostic apparatus is your own body’s feelings. We also can take more time and interest, and give more attention to our personal health than a hired professional can. We have learned to go get medical help, not to give it. We have learned to relay our body’s needs to another, not to provide them ourselves.
This can be turned around again. Much of the fear of doing something wrong vanishes when we are knowledgeable about what we are doing. There is no fence around health information to keep us from learning it. Likewise, there is no law preventing us from applying our acquired knowledge in practice to benefit ourselves and our immediate family. The jujujukey is to gain the knowledge by wanting to learn, by wanting the responsibility for our own health, and by doing something to learn to do it ourselves. Let no fear or any culturally implied uniqueness of the doctor’s profession keep you from wellness self-reliance. Why most of the today’s health professionals don’t have open minds about alternative health methods?
Medical doctors are called medical doctors for a reason. They go to medical schools and they learn medicine and practice medicine. Now, substitute the word “nutrition” or “lifestyle” for the words “medicine” and “medical” in the previous sentences and see how impossible it sounds. So, most medical personnel remain largely unfamiliar with non-medical treatments, and tend to dismiss them without knowing about what they’re dismissing. This is a great loss to the doctor as well as to the public. Today’s doctor is becoming more and more ignorant about the 6 things designed by the nature. They themselves don’t know or are ignorant about good quality Air, good quality Food, good quality Water, importance of Sunshine, Rest & exercise. As I have seen both sides of the coin, firstly I was in conventional allopathic practice for 30 years & now secondly on last 6-7 years I am seeing the miraculous effects of lifestyle changes.
I believe that alternative healing methods are much more than just temporary or half measures. I am not going to advice you some formulae or dietary guideline to follow as a master key to health. That stops short of true wellness self-reliance because it always defers final say to the doctor, and trust medical, conventional treatments for the “real illnesses.” That will not be the case here.
My presentation is incomplete, of course, because there is so much to know in this field. One thing is sure, my body has been designed very meticulously & each reaction in it is thoughtfully carved in to do specific job. As I am going discuss this in detail later on, allopathy thinks exactly in reverse way. This handbook can be a good starting point for all of you for joining in this mission.
Can this natural therapies will deal with the serious health issues?
Yes. Natural therapies aren’t just another way to fight disease, but are often a superior way to eliminate disease. This booklet focuses as much as possible on the “real” diseases. Natural healing gets down to the real basics such as your diet and everyday lifestyle…the things that really cause our illnesses, and are really difficult to change.
Nature-cure is so simple yet all-embracing that it is best carried out by the patient in daily life. No one can follow you around to see that you eat right, exercise and live happily. It is a distinguishing feature of natural therapies that they are straightforward and reliable enough to safely do on your own, at home.
Medicine has to be dispensed by a pharmacist, surgery by surgeons, drugs by prescription. Drug and surgery treatment is not safe by nature; in one case, a chemical or poison is added to the body and in the other, an organ or part of the body is removed or altered. The only way we will have health care for all of us is when each of us takes responsibility for their own health.
You choose to treat yourself and your family, that is within your rights, and is necessarily your sole decision based on what you know to be best. Self-care means accepting some risk, and accepting much responsibility. It is not for all people or all cases. Work with your doctor and try to win him or her over to the greatest extent possible.
Be Pro-active. Proactive person try to solve the mystery by going to the root cause. Unless one knows the root cause, he/she will not be able to solve the issue.
All the diseases have primary causes are toxins, oxidative stress, wrong lifestyle putting cellular health in jeopardy. So right way to tackle them will be
- Remove the cause
- Regenerate the cellular membrane
- Restore the cellular energy
- Reduce the inflammation
- Re-establish cellular integrity by re-methylation
Role of vitamin C in the health
I summarize all vitamin C research in this way: Take enough C to be symptom free, whatever that amount may be. That’s going to be a lot more than you think it will be. We go into this booklet in great detail. Remember, a hospital, by definition, is a collection of our sickest people. Vitamin C is the solution, not the problem. And, remember this too: there have been no confirmed deaths from vitamins in 28 years. Zero.
Does vitamin C in large doses cause kidney stones?
No. Vitamin C actually dissolves phosphate and struvite stones, and prevents oxalate stones by inhibiting the union of calcium and oxalate.
How about the doctors who say that if you take large doses of vitamins, you’ll just wind up with expensive urine.
If you take pharmaceutical medications, you will have even more expensive urine. In my body design genetic information, I have information about dealing with the vitamins. But I do not have any information about dealing with the foreign chemicals given to me in the name of medicines. Most of these chemicals are harsh to dispose off. That is why they are toxic to the liver & kidneys.
Chapters on how can you stop coughing without resorting to cough medicines; alternative cancer treatments; heart disease; multiple sclerosis; infectious diseases; how to get a better night’s sleep; how vitamins can help depression; how to help lower a child’s fever; natural alternatives to antibiotics and antivirals; allergies; how can you eat better cheaper; and literally dozens of other topics. Importance of organic farming in the health is also covered.
If nature-cure is so effective, why don’t doctors prescribe it more often?
Good health makes a lot of sense, but it does not make a lot of commercial sense. It’s unreasonable to expect medical doctors and pharmaceutical companies to tell you how to avoid their services by trying the alternatives. You are not going to get a ‘X’ party politician to tell you to vote ‘Y’ party, and you can’t get milk in a wine shop. Hospitals, doctors and pharmaceutical companies all share a common Achilles’ heel: they all profit from disease. I wish this were not the case, but follow the money and consider the results.
I am writing this book and I am sharing this information with you with the sole intent of making you aware of better option for your health issues. In fact onus can be put on the people for mixing the two things. We are assuming health expert & illness expert as one and the same. Actually society should promote the concept of health expert & don’t expect health advice from sickness experts. We doctors are your sickness experts. Let me explain this thing by giving you a simple example. If you want to drive a vehicle then what is more important? Knowing the basics of driving or knowing the address of crane agency who may help you in case of mishap. We doctors are expert with all necessary knowledge & equipments to help you out of the mishap. But my logic says that if you learn the basics of driving properly & you follow them meticulously then chance of you meeting an accident is minimal. Similarly in the health issue, know the basics of the body & follow some simple rules for the lifetime to avoid the accident which we term as illness.
But I am going to teach you to become health expert as it is not only better this is the far safer option to adopt.
Use vitamins and nutritional supplements in place of drugs. This takes some moxie to do, for we have been taught to be consumers of medicine. We have been taught that anything cheap and safe cannot possibly be effective. We have been taught wrong. The truth is natural healing works. It certainly has been highly effective for my family. I raised my kids and grandkids all the way into college, and they never had a single dose of any antibiotic. Not one; not ever.
Lipid-soluble materials such as carotenoids, tocotrienols/tocopherols, CoQ10, omega-3s and cholesterol act as anti-oxidants in lipid medium.
The oldest political trick in the book is to create doubt, then fear, and then conformity of action. The pharmaceutical industry knows this full well. One does not waste time and money attacking something that does not work. Vitamin E works, and the evidence is abundant.
More people used to work outside, which enabled them to get plenty of vitamin D and store it up for the winter time. In the last 50 years, we started living inside virtually all the time. In the last 25 years, we basically stopped going out in the sun at all. People have changed their minds about the sun; it is now considered “evil.” When you and I were growing up, our mothers told us that sunshine and fresh air were good for us. You never hear that anymore. Now, sunshine is a bad thing!
That was just one of several things that occurred. Others were the introduction of indoor video games and the fear that children should not be outdoors because predators might abduct them. Then, there was the fear that the sun would damage the skin. All these things affected our society in dra matic ways.
Starting in the 1980s, for the first time in human history, doctors began telling patients to avoid the sun. Up until that time, the sun was recognized as a curative agent by every form of medicine known to man. Then, the American Medical Association and their Council for Scientific Affairs started saying something very different: the sun is harmful, stay away from it. It is interesting what they didn’t say: “By the way, since you are not going out in the sun, you need to take 5,000 units of vitamin D/day to make up for your lack of sun exposure.”
In fact, they actually said it won’t matter because vitamin D will remain the same whether or not you go in the sun, which is a patently absurd statement. So, I said to myself, with the dramatic change in sun exposure over the last 25 years, vitamin D levels must have fallen dramatically in at least some, but probably many, people.
It’s really neat. Several vitamin D response elements (see Part 2) are sitting on genes that regulate the production of antimicrobial peptides. Recently it has been shown that 1,25(OH)2D dramatically stimulates genetic expression of antimicrobial peptides (10–12). Antimicrobial peptides are the very simple, very potent naturally occurring antibiotics that our bodies make. They are made by our immune system cells as well as by our epithelial cells that line our throat, respiratory tract and intestines. They exist in immune system cells including neutrophils, monocytes and natural killer cells. In the epithelial cells lining the respiratory tract, they play a major role in protecting the lung from infection. They are part of what is called the innate immune system. They’re rapid action. They’re ready to go in milliseconds of a virus penetrating the mucus of the respiratory tract. They don’t need to be primed with an antibody like the acquired immune system does. The antimicrobial peptides are useful not only in killing the bacteria, but also in regulating the immune response.
One of the reasons that so many young people died in the 1919 epidemic was once the 1919 virus infected you, it made you sick, but your immune system would make you even sicker because it would mount this inappropriate all-out attack that killed not just the virus, but also many of the respiratory cells in your respiratory tract. The victims had their respiratory tracts denuded of epithelial cells. Doctors had never seen this before.
Vitamin D works in many ways in the immune system. Antimicrobial peptide production is just one of them. What vitamin D does is make your immune system smarter, not stronger. If your immune system becomes too strong, you can get autoimmune diseases. What is important about vitamin D is that it makes your immune system smarter.
What I used to do with the Vitamin D Council back in the days when there was just one article being published in the scientific literature every week or so—now there are hundreds every month—I would write a newsletter about each new study. Now, I can’t do that because there are too many new studies.
One of the highlights of my scientific career is that within days of my first influenza paper on vitamin D and influenza being published in England in the journal Epidemiology and Infection—which is the same journal that Dr. Hope-Simpson published in—the editor received a letter from Dr. John Aloia’s research group in New York. The group had been doing a vitamin D study in bone and by chance, one of the questions they happened to ask the patients in their study was, “Had you had any symptoms of a cold or flu within the last month?” When Dr. John Aloia read my paper, and then looked at his data. Lo and behold, the women he had on vitamin D were much less likely to get a cold or flu. He wrote that as a letter to editor announcing his findings (13). It is very unusual for a theory to get supportive evidence so quickly. Now, the theory basically has been accepted as true by many. Of course, nothing can be proven to be true.
Passwater: And, we can all put that knowledge to practical use immediately as there are other health benefits from 5,000 IU of vitamin D daily in addition to reducing the incidence of influenza.
Then the immunization/vaccine theory came out and it helped these parents because it resolved these parents of blame. The immunization theory meant that these parents could say that it was nothing that I did wrong. It was big pharma and the medical system and the vaccine industry that did this to my child. I didn’t have anything to do with it – they did it. I didn’t do anything wrong. It is a very important thing to believe if you have a child who has a disease as serious as autism.
My vitamin D deficiency theory is a little bit different. My theory says that if the mother had gone out and sun bathed, her child wouldn’t have autism. So mothers could easily see that as “blame the mother.” But, of course, if she had gone out and sun bathed while she was pregnant, she would be violating all of advice given by every major medical organization in the world. Mothers should not blame themselves! They’re only doing what the doctors told them to do. It’s not their fault at all.
In large part due to autism, I predict that the advice that was given by the American Medical Association in 1988 to always avoid the sun unless you are wearing sun block will turn out to be the worst medical advice ever given in the history of mankind!

Vitamin C inhibits DNA, RNA and protein synthesis in epithelial neoplastic cells.
- 1Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan.
Radioactivity measurements and autoradiographic studies of DNA, RNA and protein synthesis using [3H]-thymidine, [3H]-uridine and [3H]-leucine revealed that Vitamin C administration significantly (by 50%) decreases the DNA, RNA and protein synthesis in the neoplastic cells of basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas in mice and rats. Basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas were induced by a topical application of a chemical carcinogen, 3-methylcholanthrene. The inhibition of DNA, RNA and protein synthesis is accompanied by advanced ultrastructural and cell surface changes. Since the concentrations of Vitamin C were significantly higher in the plasma of Vitamin C-treated as compared to that of non Vitamin C-treated animals, these findings demonstrate that Vitamin C inhibits DNA, RNA and protein synthesis in neoplastic epithelial cells, and thus exerts its antineoplastic effect.
What are the differences between the juice obtained by “juicing” and the stuff sold as vegetable or fruit “juice?”
There are several differences. The biggest is, taste! Fresh tastes better. Canned juice is pretty blah by comparison.
Second very important thing is the loss of anti-oxidant value due to heat & exposure to air. Most packaged juices have been heat treated. Canning uses a lot of heat; pasteurization uses less heat, but is still pretty hot. Frozen vegetable products are either partly cooked, or blanched, so they do not discolour with time in the freezer. Juicing your own vegetables is a very low-heat operation. Almost all juicers create some friction heat, but it is nothing compared to industrial food processing temperatures.
Doing it yourself (or watching someone else juice for you, and then guzzling it right down!) is the only way to get fresh, raw vegetable extract full of anti-oxidants & nutrients. That’s what juice is, and that’s why it is so good for you.
Fruit simply does not need juicing, as most fruits are already full of moisture, easy to chew and sweet enough for people to want to eat them whole. In fact juicing the fruits increases the glycemic load of it which is not good for the body.
Fruit is good, but vegetables are better: they are not as sweet and more nutrient-dense. In fact according to my theory, green leaves are equivalent to heart of the plants. They contain cells which are full of mitochondria, ATP, creatine, antioxidants, vitamins and other structural things required to build body cells. We recommend adding some fruit to vegetable juices for taste, especially when you are introducing juicing to newcomers. Cabbage juice and other green juices (kale; lettuce; etc.) taste a lot better with fruit in the mix. The trick is to juice often and actually drink it. Whatever gets people to down more veggies is fine with us.
The health benefits of beet juice are very much in the news these days. A glass of beet juice can lower high blood pressure by four to five points (systolic) within an hour. However, the greatest interest recently has been in athletes. Athletes are aware that several research articles have discussed the performance enhancement of beet juice due to its increased nitric oxide (NO) levels in the blood which improving blood flow and endurance.
What is your favorite recipe to use for beet juice or do you prefer to use pure beets?
Straight raw beet juice is pretty strong, so a beet and carrot blend is my favorite. Add in some fruit if you prefer. Any way you can get it down is the right recipe because beets are so beneficial. Vegetable Juicing for Everyone has a lot of emphasis on the healing value of beets, how to prepare them, grow them, juice them and more. We provide a full discussion of oxalate metabolism and reducing the kidney stone risk that has commonly, and incorrectly, been attributed to beets.
